What’s in a name?

Many people will recognise the symbol of our studio as a sacred heart.
It’s a popular piece of religious iconography and you’ll notice it quite a lot in tattooing across different styles.
While the sacred heart is predominant in Catholicism as a devotion, it is also present within some other religions.  Devotions to the sacred heart are recorded as early as the 12th century.

So Seven Swords… we chose our name and the design based of a very specific sacred heart, The Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The heart itself is sometimes pictured with the Virgin Mary, other times just by itself.  It’s characterised by the flames coming out the top (or sometimes around it), there’s almost always flowers in or around it, usually roses or lilies and the swords.  I have seen it with one sword or dagger, but traditionally it has seven swords or wounds.
These represent the Seven Dolors of Mary, or sorrows (sometimes the Virgin Mary is referred to Our Lady of Sorrows)
These seven sorrows are based around events in her life, being the mother of Christ probably wasn’t that easy and it’s an interesting read and quite in depth, far beyond this blog post but I’ve attached some Wikipedia links for those who’d like to read up more about it.
